PLANTAR WARTS

You have been diagnosed with having a plantar wart (s). Plantar is the medical term for the bottom surface of your foot. A wart is a viral condition, which occurs in the skin only. Warts on other parts of the body such as the hands often grow outward, but warts on the bottom of the foot are pushed inward by the weight of the body when walking. They often extend deep through the full thickness of the skin. These warts often are painful, and are very prone to spread. These two factors make treatment and follow up for this condition very important.

Treatment of the warts is either conservative or surgical. Conservative treatment consists of having the wart debrided (shaving the top few layers of skin from the lesion) followed by application of a strong topical medication. You were dispensed a milder topical medication to be applied to the wart(s) twice per day on a home care basis. The Salactic film was given to you to enhance and expedite the treatments. It is very important to return to the office every 2 weeks to have these treatments performed. Being consistent with the medications and office visits is essential to prevent recurrence. There are no restrictions to your daily routines and you can perform all activities.

Surgical treatment is performed in the office. In most cases a surgical Laser is used. It is performed under local anesthesia. Daily dressing changes are required. You need to restrict walking for at least 2 weeks and keep the surgical area dry until the surgical site heals.

It is imperative that you follow the instructions the doctors have given you. Applying the prescribed medicine and keeping regularly scheduled appointments are essential aspects of treating the warts in a timely and effective manor.
