Your Feet and Arthritis

Arthritis is not a single disease; it is a complex disease process that may involve more than 100 different disorders, characterized by inflammation of the cartilage and lining of the body's joints. The foot, which carries tremendous weight-bearing responsibility, has 33 joints. So when one of the joints is affected by arthritis, there’s no escaping the pain.

One form of arthritis, concentrated specifically in the foot is gout. Gout most frequently affects a single big toe joint because that joint is subject to so much pressure in walking. Whatever the reason, gout generally is considered the most painful form of arthritis, and like most other forms of the disease, it appears to have some hereditary tendencies.

Podiatrists are often the first medical practitioners to encounter complaints about arthritis. For that reason, podiatric physicians are well equipped to do something about the disease, either on their own or with other specialists who treat arthritis.

One approach to treating arthritis pain is to use an orthotic device, a custom-made shoe insert designed to help control foot functions that may contribute to foot pain. Another approach to combating arthritis pain is to wear specially designed footwear. Physical therapy may be indicated, and pain can be relieved with anti-inflammatory medication and other analgesics. Surgical intervention is a last resort, but surgical repair of damaged joints is becoming a more common practice.
